Interstate 95 is the main route people use to get to Flagship Inn. The motel sits just next to the exit ramp, perfectly positioned as a classic “hop-off, hop-on” stopover for all those road trippers between New York and Florida. If you’re coming in from Richmond International Airport (RIC), it’s about a 30-40 minute drive south with no direct airport shuttle; cab or Uber from the airport would likely run more than one night’s stay at this fine establishment — so renting a car makes all kinds of sense.
For those traveling by train, the Petersburg Amtrak Station (Ettrick) is located about a ten-to-fifteen-minute drive from here. However, public transport in Petersburg is practically non-existent. PAT buses operate within the city but are very infrequent and would be considered slow by any tourist on a schedule. It’s possible to rely on the bus system-from the motel to all of the sights-but that route demands both patience and adherence to its timetable.
Parking is the strongest logistical asset of this motel. The building is classically laid out in a "U" or "L" shape with surface parking; your assigned room has a space directly in front of its door. That setup cannot be beaten for someone hauling heavy gear-a military member moving equipment, or perhaps an older guest who'd prefer not to trek long distances through lobbies and elevators to reach his room later at night. There are no height restrictions (it's an open lot) so it can easily accommodate work trucks or vans.
