Local Spots
Flagship Inn is on that commercial strip of East Washington Street running between the highway and downtown Petersburg, a city defined as much by its pivotal role in the American Civil War as by an industrial past. In immediate surroundings to this motel are fast food joints, auto repair shops, and other low-budget accommodations. Not a scenic area; concrete-and-asphalt aesthetic parameters dominate here. However, from a strategic point for visiting where America’s longest siege took place at Petersburg National Battlefield just minutes away from entry to battlefield driving tour this location works well.
Head five minutes west, and you're in Old Towne Petersburg. Recently revived. Antique shops line cobblestone streets together with craft breweries such as Traverse City Whiskey Co.,and other local dining establishments within well-preserved 19th-century brick warehouses. This area was also largely used for the filming of Lincoln ,and walking through here provides a strong feeling akin to actual time travel.Flagship Inn is just outside this charming historic core but offers quick access without paying boutique prices inside the district itself.
Use "street smarts" to stay safe and keep an upbeat attitude about the immediate block surrounding the motel. Petersburg does have its economically challenged pockets, and Washington Street can feel forlorn and a tad rough after dark. Most recommend that you get into your car at the motel to drive to your destinations rather than walking, particularly in the evening. The area is heavily trafficked by vehicles but lacks the pedestrian-friendly infrastructure of a resort town.
